What happens at an OnBoard event?
Suitable for groups of 5 to 2000+, our popular OnBoard event delivers truck loads of value to both participants and the community. This creative challenge sees teams work together to ‘deck out’ skateboards that will be donated to young person’s charities and social inclusion projects.
Your OnBoard event will begin with a short presentation, introducing o3e, the activity, and a talk from the fantastic charity that your finished boards will benefit.
After being fired up with motivation, teams will design, decorate, and assemble two skateboards; one blank and one templated.
- Blank boards allow participants to unleash their collective creativity, designing unique, custom artwork. Teams can take inspiration from our many art and stencil books on hand, or perhaps they’ll incorporate a company logo or value.
- Templated boards are perfect for those who feel more confident staying between the lines – they’ll create a multi-coloured masterpiece on a templated design. Or why not speak to the o3e team about a custom design to bring your company’s message and values to life?
Next, teams are given a set of trucks, wheels, and bearings, along with instructions and tools. The next challenge is to assemble the boards within the short timeframe given. Will they pass the safety check needed before donation to charity?
Why Make and Donate Skateboards?
Sports like skateboarding have been shown to encourage a sense of community, particularly among socially-isolated and vulnerable young people, and lead to improved physical and mental health outcomes. Skate park initiatives have also been linked to reductions in instances of anti-social behaviour, providing young people with an outlet for expression and greater freedom to get around.
Whilst skateboarding is a relatively inexpensive sport, access is still inhibited for many by the inability to acquire a skateboard. o3e works with community and charity partners to provide free boards to youth projects, centres and charities.
Many of the skateboards built in this challenge have been donated to social inclusion projects through Barnardo’s, for young carers, children living in poverty, and children with disabilities.
OnBoard Mini Challenges
Whilst building, teams will have to channel their inner skater kid as they compete in a series of fun and inclusive challenges before showcasing their finished designs ‘Dragon’s Den’ style.
You will be able to choose from the following skater-themed challenges:
- Trick or Trick Quiz: Can you identify the bona fide skateboarding tricks from the bogus?
-
Tech Deck Challenge: Impress your team with your fingerboard skills. The better the trick, the more points you get!
-
Skater Music Quiz: Listen to our skatepark playlist and see how many songs you recognise.
What makes OnBoard so appealing is its flexibility. It can be extended or shortened to suit your team’s particular needs and fit within your larger agenda. We can run anything from a 90-minute short activity to a 3-hour long team building session, and even enhance your own event as a CSR event service.
Make it Your Own
The great thing about OnBoard is that there are so many ways you can make it your own. We offer 2 additional personalisation packages with this activity:
Personalised Design Package: Our graphic designer will create a personalised design for your templated boards to reflect your company’s ethos and values. We’ve created some incredible designs in line with client briefs that have pushed their business objectives further into their event!
Art Decko Package: We create a bespoke design that stretches across all of your boards. Whilst the boards will look amazing individually, when placed next to each other they will create a bigger picture that is designed to present the core values of your company or theme of your event. These will be displayed at the end of the event to create a truly striking piece of artwork, before skating off to be donated to your chosen charity.
Now Available as a DIY Option!
We now offer the OnBoard activity as a self-facilitated DIY option – same charitable outcome, more flexibility for you.
Order your kit online > hold your event when and where suits you > we’ll deliver the boards to your charity > you’ll receive charity feedback
OnBoard FAQs
What's the group size for OnBoard?
OnBoard is one of our most flexible activities - it works for groups of 5 to 2000+, in-person or at home. We can also offer the activity as part of a conference, drop-in, "impact hour", or exhibition stand - contact a member of the team to find out more about these options.
Where does OnBoard take place?
We'll bring our team and all the equipment for the event directly to you, whether you're at a hired event space or on-site at your offices. We're invested in keeping our carbon footprint low, so we have a network of specialist o3e Event Crew across the country. We've held events in the UK, Europe, the USA and beyond! We also offer OnBoard as a self-facilitated at home option - get in touch to find out more about this option.
How do you choose which charity the skateboards we create will be donated to?
If you don't already know which charity you'd like to support, we'll give you options for organisations in need, typically in your local area as we feel supporting your own community is important. Skateboards are in high demand from children's carers charities, community youth sports projects, children's centres and refuges. Although we work with big charities like the Prince's Trust and Action for Children, we tend to try to encourage giving donations to smaller charities and social projects who don't always receive the same funding as larger initiatives.
How long does the OnBoard activity last?
OnBoard is designed to last around 2-2.5 hours. However we can be flexible based on your agenda - if you're running a drop-in session at an exhibition, or a larger full day event, get in touch and we can discuss options. It is a great option for product launch and expo stands as a drop-in activity - it creates a real buzz and generates plenty of footfall!
What happens after the OnBoard event?
After the event, we'll deliver the skateboards you've created to your chosen charity, normally straight after your event. Once the recipients have had the donations for a short while, you'll receive feedback you can share with your team to really demonstrate the difference they've made by participating in the event.
I'm interested in OnBoard - what next?

We'll then provide a straightforward quote and a summary of the number of skateboards you'll be creating. If you choose to go ahead with the event, we'll get the ball rolling with the event set up. We project manage the entire process from start to finish. We'll liaise with you about charity options and organise the event logistics, agenda, event space set-up and charity representative. We can also add bespoke elements to your event, depending on your objectives - for example, you might want to incorporate messaging surrounding your company's mission and vision, values or brand.
